Individual or group sessions are available at two convenient area locations. Please call the American Cancer Society (1-888-227-2345) or Janise Crow (814-883-3862) for more information and to register. First time participants will receive a complementary bag of makeup and skincare products valued at $250 from leading cosmetic companies such as Clinique, Chanel, Lancôme, M.A.C, Avon, Aveda, and Estee Lauder.

According to Janise Crow, a program volunteer and facilitator in the State College area, “
Look Good…Feel Better is about improving and maintaining a woman’s confidence and self-image during a time of change and uncertainty.” She goes on to add that women “enjoy the opportunity to spend time in a relaxed, non-medical setting with other women receiving cancer treatments in the same situation. When a woman is diagnosed with cancer, her health is foremost on her mind, yet her appearance is just as significant because it affects her health and well being. It’s comforting to know that you are not alone and that there is someone to turn to when you have these sorts of questions. The free makeup and professional instruction truly helps these women, not only look, but really feel better.”
Program participants consistently and enthusiastically agree that Look Good… Feel Better programs can effect more than just how a patient looks physically, the program effects their outlook as well.
“The Look Good…Feel Better program has given me an immeasurable gift” said one local program participant. “It made me feel special and beautiful, gave me back my confidence, and made me feel feminine again.”
Another woman who participated locally said this: “I feel like a new woman-- a real person again. Words just cannot express the boost in morale your [Look Good… Feel Better] program has given me.”
“The [Look Good Feel Better] program gives woman the opportunity to talk about something central to their womanhood… our beauty” explained another participant. She goes on to say that “…to learn about beauty and makeup was exciting, but to participate in the session with other women who, like me, had cancer was transformative.”
Patient surveys and doctors agree that support programs can be a transformative experience. More than ¾ of women undergoing cancer treatment agree that physicians should recommend support programs. And 86% of women in treatment have credited looking better with feeling better.
According to Dr. Marc Lippmann, former Director of the Georgetown University Lombardi Cancer Center, one of the first cancer centers to implement the Look Good…Feel Better program “ these programs are increasingly being recognized as having significant impact on the survival rate of female cancer patients.”
Patients who have participated in the Look Good… Feel Better program consistently agree that the program has enlivened their spirit and at the same time given them back measures of control and confidence that once were lost. Beyond beauty it is the support from other women, the sharing of empowering information, the support of compassionate volunteers, and laughter that helps these women transform their self image and gain the strength to continue their fight.
